Pillars of Islam

Shahadah – The First Pillar of Islam

Shahadah (الشهادة) is the first and most fundamental pillar of Islam. It is the declaration of faith, affirming belief in the oneness of Allah and the prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH).

The Declaration of Faith

The Shahadah consists of two parts:

أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمداً رسول الله
"Ashhadu an lā ilāha illa-llāh, wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlu-llāh."
("I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.")

Meaning & Importance

  • Monotheism (Tawhid): The Shahadah emphasizes the absolute oneness of Allah, rejecting any form of polytheism.
  • Prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH): It confirms that Muhammad (PBUH) is the final messenger, following the lineage of previous prophets.
  • Entry into Islam: Reciting the Shahadah with sincerity is the essential requirement to become a Muslim.

Living by the Shahadah

  • Daily Prayers (Salah): The Shahadah is recited in every prayer.
  • Guidance in Life: It shapes a Muslim’s faith, actions, and purpose.
  • Commitment to Islam: It signifies submission to Allah and following the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah.

Conclusion

The Shahadah is not just a verbal statement but a belief that guides a Muslim's life, ensuring faith in Allah and obedience to His commands. It is the foundation of Islam and the key to salvation.
